MSO String Program in Schools

MSO STRING PROGRAM IN SCHOOLS

Our principal goal is to develop interest in playing string instruments on the part of young people at all JPS elementary, middle and high schools. Our target this year is Second and Third Graders. We believe that music has the power to change lives and will help to achieve educational goals at the school.

Facts that show the power of music:

  • Music study can help kids understand advanced music concepts. A grasp of proportional math and fractions is a prerequisite to math at higher levels, and children who do not master these areas cannot understand more advanced math critical to high-tech fields. Music involves ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. Source: Neurological Research March, 1999
  • Young children with developed rhythm skills perform better academically in early school years²

Performance in First Grade Children," University of Central Florida, Debby Mitchell Our select MSO staff of string teachers is committed to demonstrate the best teaching and learning practices in the classroom. MSO provides 135 hours per week of string instrument instruction in the Jackson Public Schools; 24 hours per week in the Clinton Public Schools, and 1 hour per week at St.Richard¹s Catholic School in Jackson. Elementary through high school level students receive 3 lessons per week in violin, viola, cello.

JPS All-City Strings Festival On February 10, 2009 all elementary through high school string students will perform at Murrah High auditorium after two days of intensive and fun rehearsal with nationally recognized leaders. Teacher recommendation is
required for students to participate.

POI

Our vision is to provide the Premier Orchestral Institute participants a musical experience that will take them beyond the basics of ³the right note at the right time,² to a level where they can listen to themselves and the group they are playing in as they make music. Our goal is to provide an environment where the students experience the ways their personal work can contribute to the whole and in that way be part of something they could not accomplish individually. MSO believes that this can be a life changing experience with repercussions beyond the musical experience.
