Pause: A short period in an individual voice in which there should be relative quiet. Useful when turning to the next page in the score, breathing, emptying the horn of salvia, coughing, etc. Is rarely heard in baroque music. Today, the minimum requirements for pauses in individual pieces are those of the Musicians' Union (usually one per bar, or 15 minutes per hour).

Jackson Choral Society

The Jackson Choral Society, one of the oldest non-profit arts groups in the State of Mississippi, invites all people with a love of singing to enjoy fellowship and music-making in this historic organization.  Each year the men and women of JCS welcome a wonderful mixture of non-professional and professional musicians, veteran singers, and college advanced high school singers to its ranks.

Known for presenting programs of high-quality literature to the Greater Jackson community, the Choral Society is skillfully led by Artistic Director Dr. Nancy Osman Moore, Professor Emeritus of Music at Delta State University.  The Society has begun celebrating its fiftieth birthday year by joining with the Mississippi Opera and the Mississippi Chorus in performing “The Best of Opera Choruses” on November 14, and the 2010 spring presentation will include the K. Lee Scott “Requiem” and favorite octavos from the Choral Society’s past repertoire.  The very special 2010 fall jubilee concert will feature the world premier of a work commissioned by the Jackson Choral Society and will have in attendance JCS Artistic Directors from years past.  The commissioned work will be composed by the nationally-known Mississippian James Mulholland on a poem by Mississippi writer William Alexander Percy.
